Many parents, caregivers, and families often wonder how they can become more involved with their child’s autism treatment. Whether you’re just starting out with Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy or your child has been receiving services for some time, there’s plenty of ways you can participate in and outside of your child’s autism therapy sessions.
Ask Questions
Our Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) and their teams aim to be as transparent as possible when sharing tips, strategies, and treatment plans, but that doesn’t mean we expect you to become an ABA specialist overnight! If you have any questions about your child’s treatment, progress, strategies, or even ABA methodology in general don’t hesitate to ask your team.
Observe Therapy Sessions
Observing your child’s ABA therapy sessions is a great way to learn more about your child’s treatment plan. By watching how your therapy team teaches new skills and addresses problem behavior, you can better implement similar techniques at home. Being consistent across settings can help your child with autism master new skills more easily than if they’re only practicing in therapy sessions. If you’re interested in becoming a more proactive parent by observing your child’s sessions, let your therapy team know. Our centers were designed with observation rooms to allow parents, guardians, and other therapy professionals to watch center-based ABA sessions.
Consider Mixing In-Home Therapy Into Your Child’s Treatment Plan
In-home ABA therapy can help you and other family members take an active role in your child’s therapy session. In addition to observing the ABA techniques your therapist uses to teach your child new skills, you can request hands-on learning to practice the strategies and skills your child is focusing on.

Stay In Touch With Your Therapy Team
At Trumpet, we like to keep in constant contact with families and parents to make sure we’re all on the same page. We regularly connect via phone and email to check in on your child’s service and engage in informal education or collaboration. These touch bases help you stay up-to-date on your child’s progress, address problem behaviors, and give you more opportunities to collaborate with your team.
Consider Parent Education Programs
Trumpet offers comprehensive parent education programs that cover topics relating to your child’s treatment plan as well as many training topics that our own therapists use before practicing ABA therapy. Taking a parent education course can help you gain a strong foundational understanding of ABA therapy and give you simple ABA techniques and strategies you can use to support your child throughout their care and beyond. To ensure you can access parent education resources, we offer both in-person and virtual learning formats.
