Early Signs of Autism

Each child with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is unique. Some of the first signs of autism that parents notice in their children are difficulties with social interactions, repetitive actions, or sensory sensitivities. Your child may show some of these signs, but not all. Or your child may display different signs that you have noticed. Autism testing, also known as an autism diagnostic evaluation, can help you find out if your child has autism and learn more about their unique needs and strengths.

Early signs of autism may include:

  • Not responding to their name by 12 months old
  • Delayed speech or language development
  • "Stimming” through repetitive behaviors or vocal sounds
  • Restricted interests or fixation on certain objects
  • Strong sensory sensitivities
  • Aversions to certain forms of interaction
  • Difficulty interacting with others or making eye contact

How the Autism Evaluation Process Works

BlueSprig can connect your family with independent licensed providers who offer virtual or in-person autism evaluations and determine whether an autism diagnosis is appropriate. An autism evaluation may or may not lead to an autism diagnosis.

Since an autism diagnosis is often needed to qualify for insurance benefits and services like Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, or other supports, getting a diagnosis can be an important step towards accessing care.

Diagnostic Evaluations in 6 Easy Steps

1. Getting Started

After you submit the interest form on this page, a BlueSprig Care Coordinator will reach out to discuss your child’s developmental history and concerns, review insurance benefits, and partner with you on next steps.

2. Connecting with a Diagnostic Provider

If an autism evaluation is the right next step for your family, we will connect you with one of our independent licensed providers for scheduling and next steps.

3. Before the Evaluation

You’ll fill out a caregiver questionnaire and other paperwork to help the evaluating provider understand your child’s background and your concerns.

4. During the Evaluation

Your child’s autism evaluation may include activities such as interviews with caregivers, behavioral observations, standardized assessment measures, review of videos (if applicable), and developmental history review.

5. After the Evaluation

You will receive a comprehensive diagnostic evaluation report and recommendations, which may include additional evaluations, specific therapies such as ABA, occupational therapy, or speech therapy, educational supports, community resources, or other services.

6. Exploring Next Steps

The independent diagnostic provider will review the evaluation results and recommendations with you. With your consent, BlueSprig can stay in touch with you and the independent diagnostic provider throughout the diagnostic process. If ABA therapy is recommended, BlueSprig or any qualified ABA provider are options to provide ABA services. If you decide to pursue ABA therapy for your child, BlueSprig is happy to begin our quick intake process with you.
